This Focused Acute Medicine Ultrasound (FAMUS) Point-of-Care Ultrasound module is aimed at consultants and Non-Consultant Hospital Doctors (NCHDs). Focused Acute Medicine Ultrasound (FAMUS) is the point of care ultrasound standard created for Acute Medicine physicians in the UK and Ireland to aid the management of the acutely unwell adult patient. It is endorsed by the Society for Acute Medicine and recognised by the Acute Internal Medicine (AIM) training committee in the UK as one way of achieving the mandatory AIM POCUS competencies. FAMUS involves training in thoracic, abdominal/renal and DVT/peripheral vascular imaging. This module provides attendees with information around image acquisition, probe manipulation, image reporting, uploading to the cloud and information on common pathology. Following completion of the FAMUS e-learning module, delegates will attend a hands-on Introductory workshop, an Interim workshop and receive ongoing supervision and mentoring of cases and logbook scan reviews over a six-month period. The module is then concluded with an in-person Finishing workshop to consolidate knowledge and demonstrate competence.

This training module provides 3 hands-on workshop sessions, 4 online masterclasses and feedback on required scans uploaded to your digital ultrasound archive on the Butterfly cloud over a 6 month period.
Day 1: In-Person POCUS Workshop

Candidates will need to register with The Society for Acute Medicine (SAM) and complete the pre-course module before they sign up for this FAMUS module.
FAMUS - how to accredit - Society for Acute Medicine
This FAMUS POCUS module is for users of the Butterfly iQ+ Ultrasound probe. All attendees will need to own an iQ+ Ultrasound probe and be setup with access to the Butterfly Network cloud, which facilitates ongoing case supervision & mentoring, prior to being accepted as an attendee to this module. Butterfly iQ+ probes are available to purchase. For Butterfly probe purchase options please speak with the PEI POCUS team.
Dr Cian McDermott FRCEM, FACEM, EACVI TTE is fellowship-trained in Emergency Medicine in Ireland and Australia. He is a Consultant in Emergency Medicine in the Mater Hospital, Dublin where he is also the Co-Director of Emergency Ultrasound Education and a registered FAMUS and FUSIC Heart supervisor. He is an Associate Clinical Professor with University College Dublin, School of Medicine. He is accredited in transthoracic echocardiography with the European Society of Cardiovascular Imaging.
Dr Tomás Breslin FRCEM, MRCPI, is a Consultant in Emergency Medicine in the Mater Hospital Dublin and Associate Clinical Professor in UCD School of Medicine. He is a registered FAMUS supervisor and RCSI Emergency Medicine Ultrasound training faculty member having previously organised ultrasound courses for both RCSI and RCPI. He isco-founder of VTEDublin and has been running the conference ultrasound workshop for 10 years and is co-founder of SONOGAMES IRELAND an ultrasound competition for medical students.
Approved by Focused Acute Medicine Ultrasound (FAMUS) / Society for Acute Medicine. Accreditation is administered by the Society for Acute Medicine. Delegates will need to register with the Society prior to commencement.
FAMUS - how to accredit - Society for Acute Medicine
There will be 12 CPD points awarded for completion of the course. 4 per day.
This cost includes three days of training (Day 1 Hands-On Workshop, Day 2
Interim Workshop & Day 2 Finishing School), plus 6 months of ongoing case
supervision/mentoring in-between.
